Early Evangelicalism

Nathan Cole

Oxford University Press

This chapter presents excerpts from Nathan Cole's “The Spiritual Travels, 1741–1765,” a journal that shares how he was deeply touched by George Whitefield, the leading evangelist of the Great Awakening. During his tour of the American colonies between 1739 and 1740, Whitefield preached before thousands of people. Cole recorded in his journal how he and his wife raced to hear Whitefield's preaching at Middletown, Connecticut, on October 23, 1740. Convicted of sin by Whitefield's message, Cole wrote about his lengthy spiritual struggle that culminated in his assurance of salvation.
