Early Evangelicalism

Thomas Gillespie

Oxford University Press

This chapter presents excerpts from Thomas Gillespie's A Treatise on Temptation (1774), the preface of which was written by the Scottish evangelical minister John Erskine. The treatise provides a fascinating psychological analysis of the effects of temptations on various age groups, socioeconomic conditions, and individual temperaments. In his introduction, Gillespie identifies Satan and his minions as the primary cause of human sin.
