John Cennick

Oxford University Press

This chapter presents excerpts from John Cennick's 1745 book The Life of Mr. J. Cennick, With an Account of the Trials and Temptations which He Endured Till It Pleased Our Saviour to Shew Him His Love, and Send Him into His Vineyard. After coming to faith in 1737, Cennick turned to the Methodist trio of John and Charles Wesley and George Whitefield for support. As the 1740 revivals took shape, Methodism split theologically between those who supported the Arminianism of the Wesleys and those who rallied behind Whitefield's Calvinism. Cennick sided with Whitefield, resulting in his expulsion from the Arminian Methodists in March 1741. The Life of Mr. J. Cennick chronicles his entry into the faith that inspired his ministry.
