John Witherspoon

Oxford University Press

This chapter presents excerpts from John Witherspoon's Ecclesiastical Characteristics: Or, the Arcana of Church Policy (1753), a satire of his perception of the beliefs and practices of the Moderate party, a faction of ministers within the Church of Scotland. Writing ostensibly as a Moderate minister, Witherspoon suggested through parody that the Moderates valued virtue over the salvation of souls and catered to the elites of society at the expense of the lower ranks.
