Charles Nisbet

Oxford University Press

This chapter presents excerpts from Charles Nisbet's An Address to the Students of Dickinson College (1786), which represents his vision of an enlightened education for the student body at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Nisbet was a clergyman sympathetic to the evangelical party in the Church of Scotland, openly opposing patronage appointments to church livings and the Moderate party's emphasis on polite preaching at the expense of the gospel message. He accepted the offer to be the first principal of Dickinson College. Despite the difficulties he encountered, Nisbet stayed in America for the remainder of his life and became an important transmitter of Scottish Common Sense Realism.
