Our Lady of Café con Leche
Our Lady of Café con Leche
The Social Construction of Catholic Devotion
This chapter argues that Mexican children in Catholic households are introduced to Catholicism via material culture and family traditions at home. That is, religious material objects and customs form part of the life of children even before they can fully comprehend their significance. I particularly focus on the embodiment of devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and the material culture associated with this religious figure. I also borrow and expand Orsi’s (1996) metaphor of the “devotional triangle” to explain how Catholic devotion is passed from one generation to the next as it strengthens the ties that bind mothers and daughters. I end this chapter with a discussion of the influence of women in the transmission of Catholic faith in the family.
