This chapter looks at the larger mechanisms by which precision journalism was institutionalized after the 1970s, becoming “data journalism” in the process. The chapter argues that newsrooms played less of a role in its institutionalization than did cross-organization journalism groups like the National Institute For Computer Assisted Reporting (NICAR). One consequence of the manner by which data journalism institutionalized was that it increasingly became an elite practice—in the subjects of its coverage, its techniques, and its practitioners.
