This chapter addresses elements of clinical occupational and environmental health practice. The chapter emphasizes the multidisciplinary approach and discusses the role of the occupational medicine physician and members of the occupational health and safety team, including the occupational health nurse, occupational and environmental hygienist, and safety specialist. Another section describes assessing work in the work environment in the context of responsibilities for clinicians and includes a brief discussion of ethical conflicts. Various types of occupational and environmental health clinical visits are described, including preplacement evaluations, drug testing evaluations, specific work approvals and work restrictions, and fitness for duty and return to work evaluations. Case examples are provided as they relate to workplace accommodations. In addition, the importance of case management is addressed relative to not only clinical care, but also returning the worker safely to the work environment.
