In the third part of his ‘Islamic Spring’ series, Zawahiri expands upon the necessary preconditions for the declaration of a legitimate caliphate and the duties that the caliph will have to respect as well as the qualities that he will have to represent. He then follows each point in seeking to demonstrate how IS and its declaration of caliphate is unjust and in violation of scripture and the prophetic method. He addresses questions concerning some of these points in more detail in the fourth instalment which, for the sake of space, I do not include here.
