Nemean 5 and Herodotus on Aeginetan Victors, Heroes, and Statues
This chapter discusses artistic efficacy and attitudes towards material culture in Pindar, Nemean 5. By framing his own poem with a statement about the communicative efficacy of sculpture, Pindar is asking important questions about the similarities and differences between commemorative art and poetry. This opening is the first in a series of gnomic expressions that anticipate a diversity of audience responses to both commemorative art and poetry across time and space, within and beyond the original Aeginetan context. Assessment of the theme of sculptural and encomiastic efficacy then leads to Herodotus’ Aeginetan logoi in books 5, 8, and 9 of the Histories.
