It is our values that provide the framework within which all planning ultimately must take place. But where do these values come from? How do we know when we are living up to them and when we are falling short? In this chapter, the author reflects on some of the ways in which an education in the humanities can provide a framework for both understanding and action. It will become apparent from some of the author’s examples, that the humanities also provide a profound foundation for the sense of personal and national identity which in turn supports the international sensibilities that are vital to a true commonwealth of learning.
