Psyche and Soul in America

Robert H. Abzug

Oxford University Press

In the wake of his religious crisis, May feels more freedom to experiment. He begins by drawing and painting scenes around Salonika and on trips to Mount Athos and its monks, poppies In the field, and Roma in the Greek countryside, incorporating a love of art and producing art that would stay with him the rest of his life. In the summer of 1932, his life is further transformed by attending the summer seminars of Alfred Adler and almost instantly becoming a convert to psychoanalysis. He has a short analysis with one of Adler’s assistants aimed at freeing him from self-consciousness, and soon he feels free enough to have his first complete sexual experience.
